Techy Voodoo Jinx

I wonder if all this time in the pool is giving me technological voodoo jinx??

Maybe being wet for so long is causing me to short out any electrical devices?? I have had NO LUCK this last week with anything technical.

Last weekend, hubby put our desktop in peril with a virus that caused lots of damage and several hours were spent cleaning it up.

Then THIS weekend, the keyboard on my laptop just went kaflooey and stopped working. No rhyme or reason, just STOPPED. While I was in the middle of a document. Luckily, Dell is going to take care of this little problem but that means I will be laptopless for about a week. All my Garmin training files, Training Peaks device manager, Tanita scale stuff, picture files, music, etc are in there. CRAPTASTIC!!

Then today, I went to use my barely a year old iPod Nano and blam! that little thing stopped working too!!
Anyone have a 10 year old then can lend me to fix all of this techy stuff??

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So other than my innate ability to destroy anything electrical, at least my training is going great.

I am having lots of fun, enjoying trying new things and I am stepping outside of my comfort zone with swimming. I will run and bike to the point of puking on any given day but for some reason I don't ever push myself that hard in the pool. I'll swim easy and long but I would avoid any kind of tough swim workout. That's changed.
I am sure there is lots of change on the horizon for me with training this season.
Quassy is only 6 months away and while I don't have any specific time expectations for this race, I do want to be strong and finish happy. And with my quads intact!! I am confident that I have found the Coach who is going to get me there.

Did you know that after Timberman my friend Marc stayed and got me an autographed visor from Chrissie?? and also got an Iron*Girl sticker and had that autographed by Chrissie and Rasmus Henning?

I had NO IDEA he did this and he did not mention it until he saw me a couple days post race.
What a surprise!!
Then he gave me these and it brought me to tears.
What an amazing friend!
Thank you Marc.

The Pirate Tri RR & Triathlon Rocks Winner!

Whew-what a race. And a last minute addition* to my race schedule at that...
The battle to get a bib was a race in of itself!! (and could be a separate blog post just to chronicle that adventure)
*One of my "A" races for this season (Black Fly International distance on July 9th) was sadly deleted from my schedule this year since some "real life" financial obligations came into play. Needless to say, the 3 day triathlon vacation planned the family had planned for that weekend has been put on hold until the 2012 season. So getting into another local triathlon asap became my obsession for a few days...thus the addition of The Pirate Triathlon at Point Sebago!

If you recall, I was battling a pretty hefty case of bronchitis for several weeks leading up to The Pirate so I certainly was not at any sort of peak condition going in...that being said, it was a super fun race and overall, I am happy with how things went (considering).

This is my first year racing with the Kennebunk Beach Triathlon Club and it certainly is a whole different experience going to the races with team mates vs. my mate (aka hubby). While hubby is very supportive of my training schedule and all things tri related, when it comes to race day let's just say it's not his first choice of places to be (he fondly refers to it as being my "tri-bitch"). So racing with the club is a win/win for both of us. I get to hang out with like minded individuals without being hounded with questions like "when are we leaving" or "do we really have to stay for awards" and he gets to not hang out at the race.

The KBTC Crew post Pirate!

In the several days leading up to the race, I knew that the weather was forecasting rain for the weekend (for once, they were right). I rode up to the race with my friend, training buddy and fellow club member, Marc and it was a totally stress free morning. We left early to ensure we got there in plenty of time--and of course, whenever you travel with me to a race there needs to be the obligatory stop at Dunkin Donuts.

I run (and tri) on Dunkin'

waiting in the car line to get into Point Sebago Resort

Transition was muddy but to be expected. Luckily, I packed a ton of plastic bags and towels so it was all good. We met up with several tri club peeps for some social time pre-race and then it was GO time!

It's GO TIME for my swim wave
The Swim-1/3 mile
The lake water was warmer than the air and was not as dreadful as I expected. A quick dip in the water, a few minutes of swimming and then the typical pre-race announcements.
I was not expecting too much of my performance on this swim. I have not been in the pool in 3 weeks (sick) and anytime I attempted an OWS so far this season, it did not work out. My plan was to just take it easy and conserve my energy for the upcoming hilly bike course and fly on the run.
All was going smooth and easy until about 20 feet from the first buoy when *POW* I got kicked in the face by a swimmer in front of me moving to the left to get closer to the buoy. This kick resulted in a face full of ouch and a ton of water shooting up my nose and down my throat. Choke, choke, choke, breathe, breathe, breathe, relax, relax, relax. I needed a minute to gather myself and took a break by swimming on my side for a bit. By the time I reached the buoy I could tell my HR shot up and I was struggling to breath calmly. I then rounded the second buoy and just went. I reached the shore in one piece and ran for the transition area, peeling off my wetsuit with ease.
Swim -10:34
Am I happy with that? No, not really. I know I have a ton of opportunity here and plan to take advantage of every group OWS I can as I do prefer the open water to the pool.

From the water to T1 (that is not me)

T1-1:40
good improvement previous T1 time with a wetsuit. Always room for improvement with free time right?

Bike Out-see the mud??

The Bike-14 miles
Hello Hills! Hello wet pavement. I had no idea what was in store for this bike course as I did not preview it or ride it pre-race. Nothing like going in blind to keep things interesting huh?
Many friends who have done this race before talk about the many climbs and the one downhill that has a sharp 90-degree right hand turn. Apparently, many a rider has gone down on this turn and with wet roads it was "Caution". Yes, there were lots of short climbs. There was also zero regard for USAT rules when it came to passing and drafting. There were cyclists passing on the right, crossing the yellow center line, stacked out 3-4 deep right to left on some of the climbs. The last 2 miles were easy and mostly down hill so I just enjoyed the break from climbing and got ready to run. Almost hit 40mph on the way down one hill and had to keep in mind the roads were slick. Weeeeeeee
Bike - 47:20 17.75 mph pace

T2- 0:52 in and out except for some side stepping around a big old mud puddle the size of a truck. Don't wanna get my pretty Pearl iZUMi's all dirty...oh, and I could not feel my feet. 12 seconds slower than my last tri T2
Heading OUT on the run and giving Jeanne the "I LOVE YOU" sign ??? Huh, what, ok Jen...

 The Run-3 Miles
Numb feet. It took a good mile to get the feeling back into my feet. This is only my second race sans socks and I love it. I love having one less thing to worry about and I love running in my Pearl iZUMi ISO Transitions. They are so light and comfy. I felt like I was crawling. I did not wear my Garmin for this race (only my Polar HRM) so I had no clue about my pace. I would have guessed a 10-12 minute mile, I usually feel great right off the bike but this was not the case. I still felt like I had water in my lungs and I could not catch a good breath. This was a lollipop course so I could see the athletes ahead of me on the course making their way back to the finish line. I was able to cheer on some friends and team mates and deliver a couple high fives in passing. I passed a couple team mates and got to run with my friend, Marc for a few minutes as well! Nothing really epic about the run except I was happy to have a short downhill on the way to the finish.
Run - 24:12 8:04 pace

Total Time 1:24:35.4
Overall Place 115 / 431
Gender Place 27 / 237
AG Place 9 / 36

I knew going into this race I was not going to be 100% but I gotta say, it was super fun! I had a blast and I cannot wait to conquer this course next year. While it was my slowest sprint time yet, it was one of the more fun races I have been at and I think I owe a big thank you to KBTC for that!

My team mates did awesome! Diane took FIRST in her age group and Tom placed 3rd in his! Also, my friend Marc got a PR for this race so all the hard work we have been doing paid off. Congrats!!

Marc in the pain locker shooting for that PR!!

The best thing about this race? My first triathlon battle wound! Remember I mentioned I got kicked in the face? Yeah, well some long gross toenail must have scratched me because when I finished, my team mate Kim told me there was blood on my face! Yeah, I was kind a psyched!!

That is one badass battle scar huh?? (do you need a magnifying glass to see it?? right there, under my nose!!)

Now for the Triathlon Rocks winner....

there were 97 eliglible entries for this contest.
To celebrate Marc's PR at this weekend's Pirate Tri, he was the lucky soul who got to help me pick the winner for this contest

What's up?

Wow. Has it really been over a week since I did a blog post??

Life has been crazy busy around here lately and I just have not had much time on the computer.

Here's a quick summary of what's been going on-

On Thursday, I got to do something very special-Present local athletes with funds raised by the Dailymile Team so they can compete in the Special Olympics this coming weekend (full blog post about this coming). Talk about awesome!!

my buddies Les and Jeff

Jeff was psyched to get this check!

There were tornadoes that came through parts of Massachusetts last week and hubby was sent down there on emergency storm duty so it was just the girls (meaning me and Lola) for a few days. While he was away we got a new pet!!

Meet ZOOT'r.
I think Lola overheard me talking about Zoot Ultra tri shorts earlier in the day...

I am finally 99% over the pretty nasty bout of bronchitis I was fighting for a quite a while. That certainly shut me down for at least a week and put a dent into my training schedule, I am easing back into it.

I had a couple nice rides and a couple two good runs over the weekend. On Friday I got out early and logged an easy 30 miles and Saturday ran an easy 8.7 miles.

Sunday, I went on my first big group ride with the Maine Coast Cycling Club. I have been riding with a friend who has been teaching me about group etiquette and hand signals so I was not a complete newb on the ride. I went with the A- group which was a very comfortable pace (we averaged a bit over 18 for the ride, 32 miles). I really enjoyed it and will certainly ride with this group again and will bump up to the A group once I really feel comfortable with the group dynamics.

A little after the ride I hit up the Eastern Trail for a quick run. The plan was an easy 3-4 but I ended up running 6 and started to feel a bit of pain in my lower right shin, close to my ankle. This has been a minor, nagging irritation for the last couple weeks. I took a walk break, stretched a bit and finished up the run with an easy jog back to the car. That night I wore my CW-X Compression socks to bed and then wore my Tommie Copper calf sleeves yesterday morning and VOILA...discomfort is mostly gone.

After many weeks of rain, it is nice to finally have some sunshine and warmer weather! We got Lola's new pool all set up yesterday and had so much fun playing outside. This is certainly going to be a fun summer this year. Watch out beach goer's--Lola is ready for summer!!

I am hoping to get a bib to race The Pirate Tri this weekend. A friend was hoping to transfer her bib to me but that did not workout (long story) so now we are going to see if I can get one last minute from a cancellation or no show. So I really won't know until Friday or so if I'm racing...

There are only a couple days left to enter my Triathlon Rocks giveaway! I gotta say, I was thinking there would be WAY MORE entries into this awesome contest. I know there were some issues with blogger and comments so...email me if you cannot comment!!

Remember, you get to choose which tee you win so if you don't pee on your bike, it's ok.
Go enter NOW!!

Triathlon Rocks! A Giveaway

Before we get to the good stuff, just a quick update. I am still sick but on the mend-I had an appointment for my annual physical on Thursday afternoon and when my doctor heard me speak (well, lack there of since my voice was GONE) she asked if I felt as awful as I sounded. A listen to my lungs answered for me. In her words "your lungs sound junky" and I was at a point where I would either start to get better on my own OR go downhill and as of right now, I was rocking a pretty good case of bronchitis. She wrote up an Rx for antibiotics and told me to get some Mucinex to help get things "moving along".
Her other Rx? Take a break from training for a few days!! (imagine that) I am, by the way.
She is an avid runner and gets the whole training thing. She is even doing her first triathlon this summer so we did spent a great deal of time discussing triathlon (another imagine that moment folks). We chatted about bikes and OWS and fitting it all in with kids.
We also laughed at my electronic medical record photo on file-she said it didn't even look like me anymore. The picture was pre-Lola and even pre-pregnancy so I was freaking huge very fat ginormous a bit bigger back then.
Who knew that an annual visit to your OB/GYM could be such a fun filled afternoon?
So I am taking it easy and waiting until I can breath clearly without any stabbing pain to actually get my heart rate up there. Yesterday I walked a couple miles on the TM, did some core work and mowed the lawn with the push mower just so I didn't feel like a slug. Today I'll lift a little upper body and the rest of the weekend we will be busy planting our garden and splitting/stacking 4 cords of wood. Yup, the good ole WoodB!tch Workout.

Triathlon Rocks!!

I have been reading the blog Irondiva for as long as I have been following blogs. I was anxiously awaiting her race report on Rev 3 Knoxville when I stumbled upon a picture of her wearing a tee shirt that made me laugh out loud.

I had to have this tee shirt!!

I searched for Triathlon Rocks online and they had a site that was under construction. So I searched some more and I found them on Twitter and then I found them on Facebook. I am SO good at stalking people huh??
I tweet to Irondiva (aka Colleen, CBK, @cbkingery) and @TriathlonRocks how I need to get this tee shirt. Agnese responded to my tweet and the e-mail exchange was on from there.
Their site launched and I was able to view all of the other tee's they offered in addition to the NOW FAMOUS "I pee on my bike" tee.
I loved all the tees they had to offer and saw a couple that I need to add to my collection.
Agnese got my two tees out to my lickity-split and before I knew it, my friendly mail man was here with my package.
Of course, I picked

I PEE ON MY BIKE

and

PEACE...LOVE...EXCEPT ON RACE DAY!

so cute with a skirt!
I was impressed right away with the cut and fabric of the tee shirts. These are no run of the mill cheapo cotton tee shirts. The ladies cut is a slightly fitted, super soft cotton. I liked the length of the shirt too-a lot of ladies cut tees I come across are too short on me. It's not like I am LONG or anything but I liked the longer cut of their tees.

I have worn my I PEE ON MY BIKE shirt out and about several times since I got it. I showed it off to my buddies in the tri club and it sparked several conversations and To Pee or Not To Pee--that is the question!!

I wore it to pick up pizza for the family and got some interesting looks from some of the people in the pizza place-guess they don't know about saving time during a tri!

I wore it to the gym and heard a couple chuckles and got lots of questions. Several people (non-triathlete) where grossed out at the thought of peeing on your bike but after discussing the virtues of it, they understood. A friend and marathon runner was all about the pee. She pees on the run (only during a race) if necessary! Yay for pee!!
Triathlon Rocks is Lola Approved!

another winner

Bottom line? I love, love my new tees!!
