I'm tough because I don't give up :-)
...even when I really want to.

One of the scariest things I've faced as a tough tri chik was my first season in triathon. At the first open water swim I thoroughly freaked out and cried for two days straight. seriously. I couldn't stop crying, thinking about how the fear got into me and I couldn't shake it. Thinking about all the people who had donated to TNT and who were counting on me to follow through with my promise to race.
I kept going back and working through the fear and now the swim is the best part of my race.

One of many many tough chik lessons I've learned through the sport of triathlon and through Team in Training.

Hmmm, I think I may guess the giveaway ! Cute idea!!

I can't say that I have tear-wrenching story to share for this. :(

I left one university in order to pursue my dream of attending Stanford and playing softball. My chances of getting in: slim. My regret if I didn't try: guaranteed.

Dream. Came. True!

Oh oh oh MEE!! I am a tough chick. I run in negative #'s. And the snow. And provide photographic evidence (does that make me tough or stupid?) I am training for my first IM, that makes me kind of tough. I drive 90 minutes one way to swim in the winter...AND I am the only one for like 100 miles that does any of this stuff in a town full of people who are..well...drinking is the main sport around here. Everyone wants me to "get over it" which isn't happening!

Oh. And I think I am the first to post...bonus points??? :)

I'm not much of a Tough Chik, more of a softie. I might laugh at fear, but only because I wet my pants (however, they're wicking, so it's not uncomfortable).

I'm tough :) I scale tall moutains and sheer cliffs. I jump out of perfectly good airplanes and I can do my fair share of *real* pushups! Don't know if most of that makes me tough or just crazy, lol ;)

hmmmmm. What makes me tough.
My parents divorced when I was 6, but it never got better. They even fought at my rehearsal dinner. I'm the oldest of six. I always said I would make a great family for myself, and I have. I'm the ringleader, I keep everyone in check. And I run : )

Running through Maine winters makes me a tough chick!

I run on this puppy. Do I win now?

I kid, but I do struggle with it, but I am determined to finish multiple marathons --because I CAN!

I'm not a tough chik, but I know a bunch of them. They are focused and they don't screw around. For some, even the hardest workouts are easier than other stuff they have to put up with, like dealing with kids, wayward husbands, sick parents, or an unhappy workplace.

BDD-yes, it is open to guys! Or if you have a tough chik in your life tell me all about her :)

Kovas-glad your comfy :)

Some of you gals I know personally and I can definitely say YOU ARE TOUGH CHIKS!

I made it to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro! My future goals include the Appalachian Trail and the Everest Base Camp. (I don't want to summit Everest, though. That's a little too scary for me!)

I also lived in a post-conflict Central African French-speaking country for two years, then we packed up and moved to India. Some people call us adventurous and/or crazy. But I think it makes me one tough housewife (and now momma).

I am a tough chick, but it's not tri or running related.

I am a tough chick because I knew when to ask for help.

3 weeks ago, I was ready to end my life. I wanted to throw in the towel. I couldn't picture living another day. I wanted to die. But, instead of following through with it, I reached out to my soon to be ex, and he brought me to a safe place, where I could begin my long journey of healing. I am facing daemons that I have ignored for more than half my life. And at the same time, I am staying strong to raise my boys, and I am training for my first 70.3 and my first 26.2 this year.

WBIM: That is tough--I am so glag you reached out for help!

Tough does not have to be runner tough or triathlete tough.
Tough is being told NO and doing it anyway.
Tough is having the guts to fight for what you want.
Tough is going against the grain.

You, my friends, are all TOUGH CHIKS> even you Kovas :)

ok,must of missed this one!

im a tough chick mentally and physically.
life is never easy or fair, but i learned to make lemonade with all the lemons!
i learned early that anything worth something,is worth fighting for.
any dream is possible, and the odds can and will be beat. (my 3 children are living proof on that one)
toughness is about never giving up,giving in but always giving 110%

I'm a tough chick because I've blown out my ACL in each of my knees and I kept playing basketball and running regardless.
I'm a tough chick because instead of staying in a career that made me miserable, I'm going back to school so I can be a doctor.
I'm a tough chick because even when the world is falling down around me, I stand up and say, "Bring it on."

Badass chicks of the world unite!

Wow - these stories are all amazing! I certainly don't qualify as tough, but I'll share my own quick anecdotes just to feel like I'm joining the crowd ;)

I work in a primarily male field - as an engineer. I work on farm equipment, and have spent plenty of time "out in the field" with our machines. So many times I've met the "good ole' boys" who think I'm just there to hold the wrench for the technician. Imagine their surprise when I'm the one that climbs up and fixes their problem...

But harder yet, I am raising three boys. Does that make me tough? No, but it makes me resilient! They test me every day, but I love it and wouldn't ask to have it any different. (okay, so it would be nice to have a little girl...)

And I love Julie's Team in Training story - I did Team in Training in 2009. Although it wasn't the toughest thing I ever did, it was the best thing I ever did. It was such a great experience and I love hearing others' stories!

I'm tough because I have an OCD husband ;) But I'm really tough because I choose to get out of bed at 4:45 a.m. and don my Hannibal Lector polar fleece face mask to dodge memere and pepere dog walkers and the occasional snowbank. :)

Overdue, but I feel like mentioning, I work in a male dominated position and deal with the typical issues and tri-ing is helping me deal w/ them.

I don't know if I consider myself tough, yet. But, I think I am getting tougher because running isn't easy for me. I still think it sucks. But I love it and the high I get after I complete a run :)

Julie @ HotlegsRunner said...

Hmm I'm tough because I choose to take on a new sport and activity every so often and will not give up until I achieve my goals =)

I have tough chik written all over my face :)

What makes me a tough chik...

Not letting my exterior make me feel inferior. Wont allow myself to turn down any challenges that come my way. Never settling for the minimum.

Even though I may never "win" a race of any kind in my life, there's always this small part of me that thinks that I will shock the world, and come in first. Every time I run whether in a race or training, I always hold on to that dream. Thinking this way gives me the strength to put another leg forward, and having that sweet feeling of my foot hitting the pavement.

Tough Chiks Rock!

Wow that is a great question. I really believe I am a tough chik. I am a single mom of two girls in their tweens! EEK! I work full-time for Oracle Corp and I coach and train on the side. My goal for 2012 is to complete a full ironman.
I am a survivor.

Yes I am one TOUGH CHIK!

I am a tough chick because I was having some knee problems while I was training for my first 20k race. I was not willing to give up on running my first 20k. I was able to run it with a brace.

The obtacle that I faced was during my first marathon. It was during our busist time in the field. So long runs were a challenge to get in. I had to get extra early sometimes just to get my long run in. Than go right to the field. No time for recovery. I did it with know regrets.

Fear for me was my first marathon. Never having ran more than 6 miles. I thought other people did that not me. I was not strong enough to follow my dream. Last year I finish my first marathon in oct.

I tend to quit everything before I start out of fear of failure - so my biggest obstacle is actually STARTING to train for my first sprint tri! - Brandi

I am tough because I get up at 5:00 am everyday to run all winter long in the snow before my four kids ages 10 -20 get up for school. I am training for my 11th marathon! Not sure if that makes me tough!!

I'm a stay at home mom to 2 little girls, almost 4 and 2. My almost 2 year old has PKU so we have to manage her diet and try to explain to her why she can't have the same foods that the rest of us eat. It makes it very tough when she wants something she can't have and doesn't understand why. It's getting worse as she gets older and has almost made me cry a couple of times!
