Motivational Monday: Start Living or Just Die

One of my favorite sources of inspiration and motivation over the years comes from Bruce Lee, martial arts master and a man with a very sharp mind. As I have grown as a human being an athlete, I have come to realize that the mind is the biggest element in training and racing.

To tap into that mental focus or that emotional well has some spectacular results. Being able to practice this over and over makes it habit. I believe that the body also really hears what the mind says and we must be careful what we tell ourselves...and limit that negative self talk.

I recall when I first started working with a Coach and I had my first race under her tutelage. It was a local 5k and I had a specific time in mind. I did not reach that time by just a handful of seconds and I was so pissed off at myself. I PR'd by quite a bit but because I did not hit some arbitrary number, my focus was on that and not the fact that my body had just performed as fast as it ever had at that distance. I did get quite the scolding from Coach that day about my attitude about it. Obviously, that lesson stuck with me to this day.

Lately my training has been very different than it has the past few years...I am so busy I struggle to find balance between working 50+ hours a week, family and training. This type of work schedule is new to me since I have been home with Lola the last 4 years so figuring it out results in less training. I am not working with Coach yet this year since my own athletic goals for the season have not been defined so it's the "No Training Training Plan" and some days my only workout(s) is the class I teach or the run I squeeze in between classes. There is less focus on pace and HR this year and just going by feel. I actually kind of like this...even though I do use my gadgets still. It's important to focus on the mind/body connection and not necessarily the data.

This is a story reported by a friend of Bruce Lee. Fitting...

Bruce had me up to three miles a day, really at a good pace. We’d run the three miles in twenty-one or twenty-tow minutes. Just under eight minutes a mile [Note: when running on his own in 1968, Lee would get his time down to six-and-a-half minutes per mile].
So this morning he said to me “We’re going to go five.”
I said, “Bruce, I can’t go five. I’m a helluva lot older than you are, and I can’t do five.”
He said, “When we get to three, we’ll shift gears and it’s only two more and you’ll do it.”
I said “Okay, hell, I’ll go for it.”
So we get to three, we go into the fourth mile and I’m okay for three or four minutes, and then I really begin to give out.
I’m tired, my heart’s pounding, I can’t go any more and so I say to him, “Bruce if I run any more,” — and we’re still running — “if I run any more I’m liable to have a heart attack and die.” He said, “Then die.” It made me so mad that I went the full five miles.
Afterward I went to the shower and then I wanted to talk to him about it. I said, you know, “Why did you say that?” He said, “Because you might as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

Do you impose limitations on yourself?
What could you achieve if you could lift those limits?

Transformation Tuesday!

I am excited to bring TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY to Miles, Muscles & Mommyhood!!

Having shared my own story of weight loss has brought so many people into my life that have had similar struggles and successes with overcoming obesity and reaching their health goals. I love the diversity of HOW and WHY and I am so  happy to share these stories with YOU.

Let me introduce my friend, Jennifer.

From Jennifer-Today, I got to live my version of a Cinderella story.  I got to tell the girl on the left that her goals of finally being healthy and running a marathon were achieved. I am now at peace with my past so I can live in the now.  All of your dreams can come true if you have the courage to peruse them. ~Walt Disney.

Jaw dropping, right!!?? Jennifer has lost a staggering 160lbs. This beautiful Mom and Wife is just as pretty on the inside as well. I have been blessed to get to know Jennifer though mutual friends and the power of social media. I am HONORED to share her story!

In her own words:

My challenges with my weight started at a very early age. I can remember being on a diet as early as second grade. I was active as a child however so that slowed down the inevitable weight gain to a degree. By the time I graduated high school however my weight was in the 200's. When high school was done so were the sports and dance. The weight came on even faster. I tried every diet there was, TWICE. That was before I realized that diets don't work. I rode that roller coaster for years. Taking off ten or fifteen pounds and putting back on twenty or more. I did not have any health issues at this point but I dreamed of more. I desperately wanted to run and feel good. I also longed to wear the beautiful clothes that my counter parts were wearing in management for a professional hair care company. At the age of 28 I had enough. I was just over three hundred pounds and fed up. Was this really living I asked myself?! I had found my breaking point...
This is when it all clicked. If I wanted what I had never had, then I had to do what I had never done. I broke up with fast food as well as Ben and Jerry's. I started eating vegetables and fruit. (The joke at the salon that I had worked at was that I hated salad.Turns out it's delicious. Who knew?!) I started making some swaps (lean chicken or egg beaters vs pizza or cereal) and I also started walking. The walking turned to a run/walk and then a very slow jog. In about six months I had taken off fifty pounds. By the end of a year I had taken off one hundred pounds. In eleven years I have taken off and kept off, a little over one hundred and sixty pounds. I enjoy eating clean and running. It was not always easy. I have had many times that I had to remind myself why this was important to me. Now that I am here at a healthier me and I look back, I can truly see that every tear shed and every moment of frustration was not for nothing. Those times of my life built me. They made me strong enough to dare to run that marathon and to not back down when the going gets tough. It is so true that anything is possible when you just believe.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. What would be your biggest piece of advice to give someone who wants to get started on their own journey?
Surround yourself with like minded people and lots of motivation. You will need a good support system which other healthy people in your life will provide. Someone to get you active on the day that it's a challenge or to share a new healthy recipe they just tried.
The other piece of advice is motivation. SURROUND yourself with it! A Pinterst page, Facebook pages, follow blogs and make a vision board. A vision board is photos and words of what "healthy" means to you. Mine is inside a kitchen cupboard door with motivation and goals. Thinking of snacking, just look in that cupboard. 😊 All of this will keep you inspired when the going gets tough and that will be huge in your success.
2. What is your favorite moment in your journey?
Actually that would be the moment captured in the photo. When I was overweight as a child two of my teachers were running marathons. I always ached inside to someday be healthy enough to run one. I am so thankful for the photographer that captured the moment that I made that dream come true. I am crying happy tears there.It is still surreal to me.
3. If you could go back in time to the "old Jenn" and say just ONE sentence to her, what would it be?
"Your tears of despair will be
replaced by tears of triumph."
4. What is your favorite workout?
This is tough for me to pick! I love Boot Camp and it has brought my life and fitness to a level I never thought possible but I have to go with running. That dream is what kept me going along the journey. Starting as a run/walk, running that first mile then my first 5k, 10k, half marathon and then the Dopey Challenge in January. Running puts me in the right head space. To remember how far I've come and to dream about what's next. Running saved me.
5. What is your favorite meal?
Almond flax chicken (marinated in olive oil, almond butter, lemon and spices) and roasted brussel sprouts. Yummy!!!!
Slimmons
Once again it appears that I have fallen off the blogwagon, but alas...life has just been a whirlwind of busy, work, travel and fun. I just got back from a week in Los Angeles to see Angela and it was an amazing trip.
Today we can thank a sick child and a snow storm for the odd chance that I am home to actually blog!!
So..let's talk about meeting one of my fitness idols.
You know who I'm talking about...THIS GUY!!
Sparkly.
Spunky.
Sweaty.
Seriously...what's trip to Beverly Hills without a quick stop to hang out with the King of Fitness himself, Richard Simmons.
Yes, THE Richard Simmons.
Angela and I were going to go to a "HardCore" class at Barry's Bootcamp Thursday evening however, a quick walk with the dog would change our plans...on our Abbey walk, we stop by neighbor/friend, Sara's house where we learned that Richard Simmons was in his studio in Beverly Hills that night.
Instant. Change. Of. Plans.
We rushed back to Angela's to get ready for class.
Pink--check
Sparkles--check
Positive Attitude--check
I have been a long time fan of Richard Simmons and meeting him in person just amplified that fandom! He is still so full of energy and is just as sweet & kind as I expected him to be.
The rules are NO PHONES and NO CAMERAS in the studio during class but after he will hang out and take pics. Ok, cool. I can follow the rules...
Angela and I wait around while tons of people start filling up his studio-a traditional "dance" studio with wood floors and a mirrored wall. There are all walks of life here--young, old, fit, not-as-fit, male, female--you name it. I was actually surprised that there were so many YOUNG ladies too!! There was a Zumba convention in town and several young gals were there to check Richard out.  I doubt they even recall the days of Richard Simmons in the 80's.
1980's Richard
Remember Deal A Meal?? (I DO!!)
and this is Richard now. Pretty sure his energy level is the same!!
High energy. The dude is a PERFORMER!! His energy was amazing and I found myself sweating and smiling ear to ear!
Here is a video clip from Richard's YouTube channel and this is exactly how the class was-- High energy, fun and he is definitely a performer! I even recognize a couple faces in this video as his "regulars".
The music was fun (and yes, he still uses records and doesn't miss a beat either!)
Before I knew it, my face hurt from smiling and I was dripping in sweat! It was a 90 minute class and the time flew by...the majority of the class was dance style stuff which was so fun and then we hit up a segment of weight training and then a core set and then a cooldown.
I am so happy that we went to Richard's Slimmons studio vs. Barry's Bootcamp.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Richard and his mission to help people. I have always believed that his heart was genuine. I was so  happy to see that this was 100% accurate and he is even nicer in person than I could have imagined...and Cute as a BUTTON!!
Next time you are in Beverly Hills, this is a MUST STOP.
It was a huge highlight of my trip!!
Not gonna lie, I did squeal like a school girl when he tweeted me today!!
Chrissie Wellington-A Life Without Limits {2 chances to WIN & CHAT with her!)
I rarely mention this but
4x Ironman World Champion, Chrissie Wellington and I are BFF's.
ok, BFF might be a slight exaggeration BUT I did meet her last year at a Make-A-Wish Foundation event, I got my finishers medal from her at Timberman AND she tweeted pics of us hanging out.
Oh, she also wrote on my Facebook page...
Do I really need to drag out ALL of the pictures of us again?? :)
The amazingly tough Chrissie has taken this year off from racing Ironman to pursue other interests, which include promoting her new book, A Life Without Limits.
Meet and greet with Chrissie Wellington
About the book-
In 2007, Chrissie Wellington shocked the triathlon world by winning the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. As a newcomer to the sport and a complete unknown to the press, Chrissie's win shook up the sport. A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS is the story of her rise to the top, a journey that has taken her around the world, from a childhood in England, to the mountains of Nepal, to the oceans of New Zealand, and the trails of Argentina, and first across the finish line.
Wellington's first-hand, inspiring story includes all the incredible challenges she has faced-- from anorexia to near-drowning to training with a controversial coach. But to Wellington, the drama of the sports also presents an opportunity to use sports to improve people's lives.
A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS reveals the heart behind Wellington's success, along with the diet, training and motivational techniques that keep her going through one of the world's most grueling events.
I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for this book to come out and found out through her publisher, Center Street, that she would be coming to Boston this month to  do a book signing event!! So I decided to wait until the book signing to get my copy. I have been watching the Center Street website waiting for them to release the location but nothing. So I tweeted them wondering when the info would be posted. They tweeted me back.
NO GO FOR ME :(  BOSTON stop cancelled.
But, all is not lost.
Home
On Saturday, May 12th (so this Saturday) THE Chrissie Wellington will be doing a live Q&A with GOTRIBal on their Facebook page! Not only can you dish with my BFF, Chrissie
You will also have a chance to win an autographed copy of the book!
13 months
Did you know that I missed my very first Bloggerversary?
Yeah...July 20th of 2010 was my first blog post!! Go read the end of that post--then come back.
The goal of doing an Ironman someday was just a little seed that had been planted and I was not ready to share it quite yet. For some reason, I held this little "secret" very close to my heart and felt that if I shared it, somehow it would end up tainted or damaged.
Sometimes, saying it out loud or putting it out into cyberspace makes it just too real.
Maybe I was not ready for that little dream to be reality so I kept in protected.
Or perhaps, other more experienced athletes would laugh and say
"no, YOU cannot be an IRONMAN"
or maybe was it actually ME questioning if I was IRONMAN strong??
Of course, I am no longer afraid to share that goal and we all know that I have 140.6 on the horizon  But let's get thru my first 70.3 first, kay?
I also have seen first hand what I can do -- mentally and physically -- and I have been able to surround myself with like minded individuals. It's amazing what this little blog has done for me-I have been able to connect with others all over the world.
People who inspire me, motivate me, make me smile and keep me on reaching for the stars!
I am so lucky to have been able to meet some of the fantastic bloggers in "real life" and there those of you I have yet to meet but I WILL (even if it means a road trip to Texas and Arizona!!)
So now 13 months and one day after my first blog post (hmmmm a different kind of 13.1?)
I will be at Timberman doing my first half Ironman
70.3
It's been an amazing year and I thank you for being a part of it.
So many of you have touched my life in ways you may never know or even understand, but please know that on Sunday, August 21st while I am swimming, biking and running through the lakes and mountains of New Hampshire, there will be a piece of you with me!!
and I will smile
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was brought to tears this winter when someone came up to me at the gym while I was working and said that they had read my blog. This person did not realize that I used to be fat.
They then opened up to me about some of the "demons" they were fighting when it came to their own well being. I have been able to connect with this person and help then recharge their own fitness goals and become a much healthier person in the process.

I started writing this blog as a way to document how I was progressing on my own journey. I thought that if I could reach just ONE PERSON and inspire them to make a healthier change with their own life, my goal would be accomplished.

So lets celebrate my "Bakers Dozen" Bloggerversary-
Happy 13 Months Miles Muscles & Mommyhood!!

I look forward to the next 13 months and cannot wait to see where the road is going to lead!!

And the You Freaking Rock Award goes to...

I know you have been waiting very patiently for me to announce the second winner of the YRFA-you know, the coveted You Freaking Rock Award.

Oh, you have no clue what I'm talking about??
If you are a new reader or just need a friendly reminder, the very first You Freaking Rock Award was given out on December 14th to the one and only EMZ. You can read all about it here.

I know, I know. It appears that I totally skipped over the Month of January and did not select a winner for the next award BUT actually, this blogger deserves TWO months SO without further ado, I will now tell you who is being honored!

It's Jason
(formerly of Life of an Aspiring Triathlete
which has now grown into the updated and sleek site
Cook Train Eat Race.

If you do not follow this blog already, you are missing out. Even if you have no interest in endurance sports, you will find SOMETHING that will make your day a little better :)
This New Yorker turned Texan talks about motivation, being real, making change, and inspiration-

He creates an entire day of healthy eats in his feature, The Athlete's Plate.

The one thing that really stands out about Jason is his positive energy. No matter what kind of day you are having, he can find a way to make you laugh, smile or even feel good about a not-so-good day. He is there with an uplifting comment or words of encouragement to so many!!

Jason started dipping his toes into the endurance waters in 2007 completing several half marathons before his discovery of triathlon. He has since completed marathons, triathlons and currently he is training for Ironman 70.3 California in April.

It is only natural that with his contagious energy, smashing personality and love of endurance sports that he is also a Team Leader for Marathon Makeover in North Dallas.
What is Marathon Makeover? Marathon Makeover is a 40-week, marathon-training, wellness program and is helping ordinary people do the extraordinary — train for and finish a marathon! Now, we are ready to transform the couch potatoes of North Dallas.
You don't have to live in the Dallas area to take advantage of their training plans, online training plan and support is also available.

Jason and his wife, Karen recently celebrated their one year wedding anniversary. They met through running and continue to run together. I think that is just super awesome. OUR family is wishing you both many happy miles on the road of life!!

Thanks Jason for bringing inspiration, motivation and positivity into SO many lives. I see big things in your future!

There are many more things you can learn about him and from him but I will let you make those discoveries on your own. Go ahead, go read his blog--

On yesterday's post I discussed the word BELIEVE and talked about how my journey had impacted my INNER me far more than the outer physical changes. I will leave you with these words (from his website) that I could not echo more.

I believe in the power of endurance sports to provide us with strength, confidence, health, wellness and tons of other adjectives. It is a lifestyle that will lead you to the tops of mountains because no matter how fast you are when you cross the finish line you are a doer, a finisher and unique. We are the few that look at a race and think to themselves this is going to be fun. Others run away and we run to.
