Triathlon Rocks! A Giveaway
Before we get to the good stuff, just a quick update. I am still sick but on the mend-I had an appointment for my annual physical on Thursday afternoon and when my doctor heard me speak (well, lack there of since my voice was GONE) she asked if I felt as awful as I sounded. A listen to my lungs answered for me. In her words "your lungs sound junky" and I was at a point where I would either start to get better on my own OR go downhill and as of right now, I was rocking a pretty good case of bronchitis. She wrote up an Rx for antibiotics and told me to get some Mucinex to help get things "moving along".
Her other Rx? Take a break from training for a few days!! (imagine that) I am, by the way.
She is an avid runner and gets the whole training thing. She is even doing her first triathlon this summer so we did spent a great deal of time discussing triathlon (another imagine that moment folks). We chatted about bikes and OWS and fitting it all in with kids.
We also laughed at my electronic medical record photo on file-she said it didn't even look like me anymore. The picture was pre-Lola and even pre-pregnancy so I wasfreaking huge very fat ginormous a bit bigger back then.
Who knew that an annual visit to your OB/GYM could be such a fun filled afternoon?
So I am taking it easy and waiting until I can breath clearly without any stabbing pain to actually get my heart rate up there. Yesterday I walked a couple miles on the TM, did some core work and mowed the lawn with the push mower just so I didn't feel like a slug. Today I'll lift a little upper body and the rest of the weekend we will be busy planting our garden and splitting/stacking 4 cords of wood. Yup, the good ole WoodB!tch Workout.

Triathlon Rocks!!
I loved all the tees they had to offer and saw a couple that I need to add to my collection.
Agnese got my two tees out to my lickity-split and before I knew it, my friendly mail man was here with my package.
Of course, I picked
I PEE ON MY BIKE
PEACE...LOVE...EXCEPT ON RACE DAY!
I was impressed right away with the cut and fabric of the tee shirts. These are no run of the mill cheapo cotton tee shirts. The ladies cut is a slightly fitted, super soft cotton. I liked the length of the shirt too-a lot of ladies cut tees I come across are too short on me. It's not like I am LONG or anything but I liked the longer cut of their tees.

Triathlon Rocks!!
I have been reading the blog Irondiva for as long as I have been following blogs. I was anxiously awaiting her race report on Rev 3 Knoxville when I stumbled upon a picture of her wearing a tee shirt that made me laugh out loud.
I had to have this tee shirt!!
I searched for Triathlon Rocks online and they had a site that was under construction. So I searched some more and I found them on Twitter and then I found them on Facebook. I am SO good at stalking people huh??
I tweet to Irondiva (aka Colleen, CBK, @cbkingery) and @TriathlonRocks how I need to get this tee shirt. Agnese responded to my tweet and the e-mail exchange was on from there.
Their site launched and I was able to view all of the other tee's they offered in addition to the NOW FAMOUS "I pee on my bike" tee. I loved all the tees they had to offer and saw a couple that I need to add to my collection.
Agnese got my two tees out to my lickity-split and before I knew it, my friendly mail man was here with my package.

so cute with a skirt! |
I have worn my I PEE ON MY BIKE shirt out and about several times since I got it. I showed it off to my buddies in the tri club and it sparked several conversations and To Pee or Not To Pee--that is the question!!
I wore it to pick up pizza for the family and got some interesting looks from some of the people in the pizza place-guess they don't know about saving time during a tri!
I wore it to the gym and heard a couple chuckles and got lots of questions. Several people (non-triathlete) where grossed out at the thought of peeing on your bike but after discussing the virtues of it, they understood. A friend and marathon runner was all about the pee. She pees on the run (only during a race) if necessary! Yay for pee!!
Triathlon Rocks is Lola Approved! |

Lola did lots of running around this week and I had to grab the camera and capture some of these moments as she sprinted around the house.

TTT
It's Thursday.
It's still raining.
It's been raining for over a week straight.
and I feel like napping.
Today is a "rest day" (with the exception of the 1 mile I will run for #runstreak")
Matter of fact, Lola and I were on our way to an epic adventure to Chuck E Cheese's when she conked out on the floor. sound asleep.
guess what? I am going to join her.
Let it rain.
1) So the whole nap thing? Yeah--last night I started feeling a bit of a sore throat coming on and woke up with more throat thickness and a touch of sinus congestion.
crap!!
I hate getting sick and so I think a nap is the best thing I can do right now. Along with drinking copious amounts of fluids and hot, spicy food! Bring on the green tea and jalapenos!!
2) I had my body fat measured yesterday via caliper by Lisa at work. So comparing that measurement to my fancy, schmancy Tanita BC-1000 scale and they were pretty dang close (15.7% via caliper and 17% via scale). I am really surprised that my body fat % was that low--I was expecting a higher number. I am not super pleased with the way the booty looks right now, (especially in that awesome video of me crossing the finish line of the Polarbear Tri two weekend ago-Thanks for that Joe!!) but apparently, it is not all fat. I guess having a size 22 ass at one time will leave things a little less "perky" back there. But Lisa did not seem surprised and said I was actually very lean and the "fat" that I showed her is "skin". Hmmmm. I still wanna drop another 10lbs....

So I started project Miss New Booty and with the help of Lisa, PT extraordinaire, we are gonna whip that booty into gravity defying bootyliciousness along with some more definition in my quads-
I have two friends joining me with their own little challenges too-
Dawn is doing the Jimmy Dean Sausage Challenge (she thinks she looks like a sausage in her tri kit) and Marc is doing Project Wetsuit-do I need to explain this one?? Yeah-he needs to fit in his wetsuit for this season. His first race is this Sunday...Good Luck Marc!
We will be checking in again on July 1st to see who dropped the most body fat.
3) Yesterday was Ride of Silence day to to honor fallen cyclists--cyclists joined worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
The Ride of Silence...
Tonight we number many but ride as one
In honor of those not with us, friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, sons
With helmets on tight and heads down low,
We ride in silence, cautious and slow
The wheels start spinning in the lead pack
But tonight we ride and no one attacks
The dark sunglasses cover our tears
Remembering those we held so dear
Tonight's ride is to make others aware
The road is there for all to share
To those not with us or by our side,
May God be your partner on your final ride

The "other" challenges of training
I know many of us talk about how we find a way to balance life with a crazy training schedule. I mean, seriously--for some of us, training is like having a part time job and we dedicate our heart and soul to the sport. I know we find challenge it hitting a certain pace goal or getting our nutrition right --
But what about the "other" challenges of training??
Challenges like
I know hubby and I had a conversation this weekend about how he is feeling a bit insecure and left out of my life at times
I mean, yeah - I get it.
Last Saturday was spent racing (race report is coming soon! I promise!) and then I hung out post race with my tri club and others and had a ball!
THEN
I was out for hours on end Saturday riding 60+ miles while some members of the tri club did The Budgetman 70.3 training race and then we hung out after. I did leave early (2pm) and the party continued on without me (till 7pm).
I have asked him to come to social events and races or what have you but really, he has no interest.
What?? No interest in watching a bunch of triathlon geeks hanging out in spandex, covered in sweat and caked in salt, swapping war stories about THIS Ironman race or THAT training session gone bad.
ME?? Yeah, I live for that stuff!!
I also get it that I have gone from being very overweight to where I am now -- I am sure that this can bring some sort of insecurity as well. I don't think the snarky comments from his friends help much in that department either...But he also sees these things from a MALE perspective and well, we all know where that male mind tends to wander whenever it comes to male/female relations.
I see it as me wanting to ride "with the boys" is only going to make me a stronger cyclist.
But then on the flip side, he is very supportive of my training & racing time - I could not do what I do without his help. I have heard him talk to his friends about how proud he is of me and all I have accomplished over the last 2 years.
One time while discussing me pulling the trigger on 140.6 someday, he even said it would be cool to have an IronWife. That made me happy...He also knows how much joy triathlon has brought into my life and he is really glad that I have friends that share the same passions I do.
We talked it out and all is fine. I can see his point of view on some topics. Some of his points were valid while some bordered on ridiculous (but in a funny way).
Have you ever had to deal with insecurities with a spouse or significant other?
How did you help reassure that person?
What "other" challenges have you faced during training?
But what about the "other" challenges of training??
Challenges like
- planning your daily nutrition to keep on track or meet a certain fitness goal??
- skipping those weekend drinks with friends?
- non-endurance-freak friends who question your sanity or just "don't get it"??
- finding the money to pay for all things triathlon (ie gear, race fees, travel expenses etc.)??
- or a spouse or significant other feeling a bit jealous if you are training with someone of the opposite sex??
- your spouse or S.O. even feeling left out?

#bikestreak
My 30 day #bikestreak came to an end on Sunday, May 15th and I did manage to get in at least one mile every single day on the bike during #bikestreak.
The most miles were on day 29--60.4 miles
The least miles were on days 9, 13, and 30--just one mile to meet my #bikestreak requirements
I also started riding my bike to and from work during #bikestreak, not just because of the challenge but
1) gas is $4.00 a gallon
2) I like riding my bike
3) I really riding my bike
and finally
4) I really, really like riding my bike
So I racked up
381.64 miles
during those 30 days and I can honestly say I enjoyed each and every one of them.
It has been rain, rain, rain here so I am using the car to get to work this week and I was not able to make my cycling class today (Tuesday's with Charlie) so I have not logged any miles in the last two days.
boo :(
But now we enter a new phase of my little #streak challenge.
Monday #runstreak started.
Same rules apply--I must run once daily and the minimum must be one mile!

I'm Streaking!
Meet my new loves
When Outside PR told me that there were sending me a pair of Streak II's from Pearl iZUMi to review, I could NOT WAIT. I have been a fan or Pearl iZUMi cycling gear for a while and was quite excited to try their running line.
After a couple of weeks of stalking my UPS guy, THE box finally arrived. I tore into that box with the excitement and eager anticipation of a 5 year old opening gifts on Christmas morning.
It was certainly LOVE at first sight--I immediately started planning on a test run as soon as hubby got home from work.
I mean, seriously-look at this shoe. So good looking.
The new women's Streak II has been completely overhauled this season to be even faster, lighter and more performance-oriented than ever. With a new lower profile midsole and lightweight upper, the Streak II is light enough for a 5k, but cushioned enough for a marathon. This is your new go-to PR shoe.
When I picked it up out of the box, I was surprised at just how light it was (just under 7 oz) and I was excited about the low heel drop (about 9mm).
Now, I want to back up a bit here--if you recall, back in January I suffered a minor knee injury (PFPS) and after seeking the advice of a professional (Jared at Orthopedic Associates PT), one of the issues he wanted to correct was getting me OUT of those big, built up shoes and into something lighter.
The Streak II fit that Rx!
I have been moving into more of a minimal shoe since my experience in PT and the Streak II did not disappoint. The shoe is comfortable, responsive and provides some cushioning while still allowing me to run properly (no heel striking in these!). There have been no compromises in comfort or style with this shoe. I also liked that the toe box was not narrow, it a bit more generous than some of the lightweight performance shoes I have tried in the past. I had no issues with tightness, rubbing or blistering at all. The laces do not come untied all the time like some running shoes I have worn, I did not even have to double knot them! I also like the that once you adjust the fit over the foot, it tends to stay put. This shoe is also very breathable.
I kept my first couple runs short (3 miles) to give my legs time to get to know the Streak. After a couple short runs in the Streaks, I tried adding some miles and was still pleased on how they felt in the 5-6 mile range. I ran in them for speedwork and I suffered no knee pain, no shin pain or any other type of pain anytime while running with these.
I do not have anything negative to report about the Streak II but I do want to note that in general this shoe runs small. I normally wear a ladies size 9 in a majority of running shoes and did go up to a size 9.5 in the Streak II as the Pearl iZUMi website suggested and it fit perfect. I would recommend going up a half size in the Streak II.
From the Pearl iZUMi site about fit:
RACE LAST- Note this shoe fits 1/2 size smaller than our standard fit. Please order accordingly.
I also noticed that while I have not put in a ton of miles on this shoe yet (~100 or so), the sole seems to be wearing down easily. So I will be see how many miles I log in this shoe.
Now that my body is getting used to a minimal shoe, the Streak II will not only be my choice for a racing shoe but also a training shoe. This is the perfect lightweight performance shoe that I have been seeking.
Sorry to say Kinvara (collective gasp!) but...I'm now Streaking!!

The Budgetman 70.3 (and a winner!)
Hello!!
Life is crazy busy right now--in a good way--training is going really well and I am feeling fantastic. Lots of new mini-goals are taking shape, which of course I'll be sharing with you all very soon. I am so happy to be able to offer some more fun giveaways coming up too!
And now, it's time to announce the winner of the SocksAppeal.com giveaway!
There were 87 eligible entries for this contest.
To pick a winner this time, I asked my Dailymile Team Mate, Adina for help.
She picked number fiddy tree (as her hubby says)
that would be #53 to the rest of us!!
#53 was none other than COLLEEN
My favorite IRONDIVA
Please head on over to her blog and check it out if you do not already
Colleen is racing Rev3 Knoxville this weekend!! I wish I could be joining all of you Rev3's Racers this weekend--have a blast!!
This weekend I will be participating in a comical version of a half-iron distance race called
It's only $10 to participate, there will be no course support, no timing, no directional signs, there are no medals, no sweeper vehicles, no USAT ref's, BUT you do get a Hane's cotton tee shirt with The Budgetman written in Sharpie on the front and the tri club members will bring a dish for a pot luck for after the "race".
Considering the water temp of Little Ossipee Lake is only 47* today, there may be a plan change for the swim portion of the race (?? the Y pool anyone). So, while I am not doing the entire "race", I'll be doing the 56 mile bike course and shooting for a 5 mile run post bike. It should be a fun morning!
Happy Training

This weekend I will be participating in a comical version of a half-iron distance race called
"The Budgetman 70.3"
Charles, tri club member and THE Charles from my Tuesday cycling class (Tuesday's with Charlie) has put together this fun race in prep for his Ironman Coeur d'Alene race in June--It's only $10 to participate, there will be no course support, no timing, no directional signs, there are no medals, no sweeper vehicles, no USAT ref's, BUT you do get a Hane's cotton tee shirt with The Budgetman written in Sharpie on the front and the tri club members will bring a dish for a pot luck for after the "race".

As most of you know, my hero--EMZ--ran for an incredible 24 hours from 6am on Friday until 6am on Saturday to raise money for The Sojourner Center in Phoenix AZ.
I would have loved nothing better than to have been there in person to cheer her on but since I could not make it, my beautiful cousin Kim was able to make it out to Channel 12, not only to cheer her on but to also run next to Emz!! (text is green since I am green with envy!!)
You can read about Kim's adventure with EMZ here.
So, to pick the winner of the GU Giveaway, I figured who better than the amazing EMZ?? This chick knows endurance!! I asked EMZ to pick a number between 1 and 126 and she picked

To pick a winner for this time around, I took the 59 eligible entries and removed the 4 entries that the original winner submitted and plugged in the rest to Random.org
Of the "new" 55 entries, Random.org selected #54

sweat & tears
I did not proof read this post. I did not use proper punctuation or grammar. I just wrote what was in my heart-
this mornings trainer ride was an interesting one to say for sure...
you see, tonight i am going to be speaking to a group of individuals that are starting THEIR own weight loss journey--i will be telling them about my own. i feel quite honored that i was asked to speak to them actually and i have always said that if i can inspire JUST ONE PERSON to change for the better (whatever their version of better may be) than i did something good.
i am a very happy person now and 99.9% of the time there is this giant grin plastered across my face. i love my life. i love the person i have become. i love the people that i am surrounded by. i feel very blessed.
and i worked damn hard to get here.
just a couple years ago i was in a much darker place. i was not the happy person i am today. i was actually very, very miserable and sad. empty. joyless. beaten. destroyed.
but i picked up the pieces one by one. and i rebuilt my life. myself. i healed old hurt. i found new ways to love me. i found bits of joy and shreds of sunshine coming into my life. things started to change. i was growing as a person on the inside while the outside was shrinking.
it was not an easy battle--and trust me, some days it was a battle. it was hard. and it was worth it.
but the joy did not just come from a smaller body. or a lower number on the scale.
the joy i found was in the small triumphs i had along the way.
running a single mile without stopping
running a 5k
being able to do real push ups
placing at my first race
running distances i could only dream about
completing my first triathlon
it was these moments that started to shape me in ways i never expected. i found joy in the hours on the roads. i found freedom swimming in the ocean. i found a new confidence in myself by doing these things that i never thought possible. i found out that i am a hell of a lot stronger than i ever gave myself credit for. i am a worthy individual that deserves joy, love, laughter and good things.
why had i allowed myself to be void of all these small pleasures before? why did i think i was not worth it??
well, there are so many reasons i felt that way-not loving myself enough was one of them. getting fat was just symptom of my inner disease. that disease was never thinking i was good enough.
so on the trainer this morning, i was thinking about some of the things i would say to this group and my mind just started to wander. then i thought about a post that Mary Iron Matron wrote the other day. then THAT song came up on my playlist. kinda dorky being miley cyrus and all but i remember listening to this* song over and over when i was 250+ pounds dreaming of the day i would run. running meant freedom to me. if i could run, i would have conquered the fat body that was trapping me. it was so.freaking.hard for me to run that fat. i could only go 15-20 seconds at a time, my heart rate would soar. but i kept running. and i'd run a little bit longer each time. reliving those memories this morning just brought me to tears. it broke me down. part happy and part sad. it's hard to explain...but while i was crying, i was celebrating. and cranking---hard. those intervals stood no chance today. i kicked the shit out 'em. and i dreamed of my first 70.3. and I could not get off the trainer. the puddle of sweat and tears just got bigger and bigger. i just wanted to go. and go. and go.
and i thanked GOD for the place i am now. and the places i have been.
because without those lows...you don't appreciate the high.
Here's THAT* song

I can almost see it.
That dream I'm dreaming, but
There's a voice inside my head saying
You'll never reach it
Every step I'm takin'
Every move I make
Feels lost with no direction,
My faith is shakin'
But I gotta keep tryin'
Gotta keep my head held high
There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waitin' on the other side
It's the climb
